Short rest for the English Premier League, who just finished a round a play on Tuesday and Wednesday and now play again this weekend. In our EPL Betting Update article last week we spent some time discussing Leicester City, who has by far been the surprise team of the league thus far but had a tough matchup at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Foxes were able to pull the big upset in that match, as Robert Huth headed one in the back of the net in the 83rd minute for the game’s only goal, returning a big +415 payday at the online sportsbooks for the outright win.
Leicester for City has now pulled even with Arsenal a top the EPL table, trailing only in goal differential. Arsenal is +16 while the Foxes are +13, but are gaining confidence every week and Wednesday’s big victory can only boost momentum going into this weekend.
Leicester City is the favorite to win this Saturday against Aston Villa, with the online sportsbooks listing the Foxes at +110 to win outright (draw returns +225 with the upset returning +250). The Villans recorded just their second victory of the season in a 1-0 win vs. Crystal Palace, meaning they are in a huge letdown spot this Saturday. Aston Villa remains in dead last with 11 points, eight points behind Swansea City above the relegation line.
Arsenal played to a 3-3 draw with Liverpool, with the three goals allowed a bit disturbing considering they allowed 18 goals combined over their previous 20 games. Curious to see if Leicester’s pulling even in points will have an effect on Arsenal in the near future. They are a -110 favorite to beat Stoke City outright. Stoke is currently in seventh place, and has suffered just five defeats all season.
While Arsenal and Leicester lead the league with 43 points, Manchester City is next with 40 points while Tottenham Hotspur remains fourth with 36 points. City is coming off a 0-0 draw against Everton and is a big -280 favorite to beat Crystal Palace this Saturday. Joe Hart matched Petr Cech with nine clean sheets for best in the EPL this season, and the 21 goals scored against Manchester City is tied for second-best with Arsenal behind Tottenham. Tottenham is the biggest favorite on the board this weekend, laying a big -295 price to beat Sunderland, who is returning a massive +855 payout if they somehow pull the upset.
Manchester United drew 3-3 vs. Newcastle, and coupled with West Ham’s 3-1 victory vs. Bournemouth the Red Devils have relinquished their #5 place in the table. United has a tough task this Sunday on the road vs. Liverpool, and the online sportsbooks list the Red Devils as a +230 underdog to emerge victorious. Liverpool is +120 to win with the draw returning +225.
Betting on the draw isn’t a popular soccer wager, but it often does return good value. There were four draws last week (out of ten games), so taking the draw blind in every game would have resulted in a hefty profit.
We’ll be back soon with another EPL Betting Update.
