Russian President Vladimir Putin is once again on the news to complain. This time it is about the upcoming Summer Olympic that will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this summer.
The complaint stems from a speech he made to 100 Russian athletes this past Wednesday concerning the Russian track and field team being banned from this year’s Olympic Games.
This comes in the wake of the World Anti-Doping Agency placing a ban on the entire Russian Olympic track and field as well as several other athletes. In addition, WADA even suggest that all Russians Olympic athletes should be banned as they said that an independently commissioned report found evidence of a four year , state-run “doing program” across the “vast majority” of Olympic sports.
Most online sportsbooks have already changed their early 2016 Olympic Summer odds based on the news of some of the Russian medal contenders being out of the picture like Yelena Isinbayeva, a champion pole vaulter.
So far, 85 Russian athletes out of 387 have been barred from participating in connection with the country’s doping scandal. This has led to Russia losing several medal contenders from participating which include Alexander Dyachenko, a 2012 Olympic canoeist gold medalist champion.
The Russian Canoe Federation and several other athletic teams will also be appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport as they do intend to defend their athletes. The IOC has refused to accept tests made by the Russian agencies because the report stated that the doping problem came from a State-Run program and fear another cover up.
"We can't accept indiscriminate disqualification of our athletes with an absolutely clean doping history," Putin said. "We cannot and will not accept what in fact is pure discrimination."
Even though the Olympic games is usually not a big event when it comes to bet sports online, it does bring a lot of one time bettors because of it being worldwide event. It is however considered more of a recreational type of betting as most professional gamblers will usually stick to one or two sports that they excel at.
